Five Ways to Keep Your Cool in Summer Traffic

RoadRage

With longer days and soaring temperatures, residents in Bradenton should expect steady increases in the amount of traffic on the roads. On the heels of a busy spring break season, the next wave of tourists are already gearing up for their summer vacation plans. While it is natural to get aggravated by road congestion and delays in your commute, losing your cool behind the wheel makes car accidents and injuries more likely to occur. The following offers general information all motorists need to be aware of about the dangers of aggressive driving, as well as ways to avoid this type of dangerous driving behavior.

Aggressive Driving In Florida

Losing your patience and acting aggressively towards others puts everyone on the road in danger. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), aggressive driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents and injuries on local highways and interstates, as well as one of eight areas of concern addressed in the state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan. Under Florida guidelines, aggressive driving occurs when motorists commit two or more of the following actions:

  • Speeding or driving too fast for conditions;
  • Improper lane changes;
  • Failing to yield;
  • Tailgating, or following other drivers too closely;
  • Failing to obey traffic signs and signals.

In an effort to improve safety, FDOT is targeting high-risk locations, such as intersections and interstate exit and entrance ramps, with technological improvements meant to increase traffic flow. Law enforcement officials are also on the alert, ready to write tickets for drivers engaged in speeding and other types of dangerous and illegal aggressive driving behaviors.

How to Combat Aggressive Driving

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) advises that if you encounter an aggressive driver on the road, the best way to protect yourself is by staying calm and moving out of the way, rather than letting them provoke you into escalating the situation. Be aware that the left lane of traffic is generally reserved for faster moving vehicles and stay on the right side, unless you need to pass someone else. To avoid being an aggressive driver, the FHWA advises following these six tips:

  1. Avoid the need to rush. Make it a habit to leave early and allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
  2. Be a conscientious driver. Follow all traffic rules and regulations.
  3. Realize that you cannot control traffic. Tailgating will only provoke other drivers.
  4. Be considerate. Yield when appropriate and take turns when merging.
  5. Resist the temptation to get revenge. When another driver acts rudely, avoiding trying to ‘teach them a lesson’.
  6. Stay calm and keep your focus on driving safely. Keep your mind on getting to your destination safely and avoid being distracted by cellphones, texts, or even other passengers in your vehicle.
