the “almost like new car” scam
Recently I bought a new car. Or I should say almost like new. Like a lot of you I needed a new car but wanted to save on some of the new car depreciation. You’ve all heard the old saying, “once you drive it out of the dealership it’s worth ten thousand less than you paid.” Fortunately for me I think I got a good deal and I’m very happy with my purchase. I’ve recently had two clients tell me otherwise. Twice in the last three months I’ve had clients purchase slightly used vehicles for what they thought was a fair price. The dealership was more than happy to show them documentation indicating the vehicle had never been in an accident. They even had the written proof to show me. Of course you know the rest of the story; upon further examination they discovered their vehicles had in fact had been in an accident; one of them quite serious. My advice, skip the written proof. If you’re going to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a like new vehicle and the price is too good to be true, then of course it is too good to be true. Take the vehicle to a reputable body shop and have them examine the vehicle as well as the airbag diagnostics. That will tell the true story.
